Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) is the fruit of the blackberry shrub, a native of many parts of the world but most notably Europe and America.
Blackberries are distinguished by the very deep purple colour of their skins, which are a rich source of polyphenols. Polyphenols are potent antioxi-dants which display cell-protective properties. These polyphenols include anthocyanins and ellagic acid – an anticarcinogen, which is particu-larly abundant in blackberries.
Blackberries are a good source of Vitamin C – a vitamin involved in a wide range of bodily process-es. Vitamin C is required for normal connective tissue structure and function, the normal structure and function of blood vessels, and contributes to cell protection from free radical damage.
Blackberries also contain Vitamin K – a vitamin necessary for normal blood coagulation and normal bone function.
Blackberries are a good source of Manganese – a mineral that contributes to normal connective tissue structure and function, normal bone forma-tion, normal energy metabolism, and protection from free radical damage.
